I'm taking off for Spring Break in two days. Warm weather and no homework is certainly a break, but you just can't break from the job search. There is never enough time; this past week was full of midterm exams and papers, but I managed to get a few
networking emails out to people. Now we wait. And while waiting, I'm looking to pick that next "set of positions" to research, write cover letters, and apply. Then, right about the time someone might reply, I'll have a whole new set of questions waiting for them.
Now onto the real spring break. Last week I mentioned the credit problem in America, and frankly the week of spring break has great potential to only make the situation worse. What's better than spending money you don't have? Doing it while in Mexico. My break starts tomorrow, and if you're like me and haven't taken off yet, please be mindful of your spending.
On that note, when I do, I'll be sure to use my pay-to-shop credit card (that I also mentioned last time).
And of course, because you never know who you'll meet on a plane, train, or boat, keep those networking eyes open. I used to joke about walking onto a plane (usually Southwest) and trying to pick out the best person to sit next to for a job. But then, everyone I picked had no interest in me, even when I read the Wall Street Journal! Then I realized the people who might actually be interested aren't the one's wearing suits or dresses, they're the ones wearing sweatshirts and jeans. Don't make the same mistake. Here's the next video in my mini-series (they have a huge series and I like to pick and choose, this one is perfect for that lucky time when you run into someone from your favorite company on the beach in Cancun):
As an attempt at a commitment device, I'm putting it out there: post spring-break is make-or-break time for the job search. There are open positions on Capitol Hill, and graduation is soon enough where graduating seniors are viable options. If you're in the same boat, don't panic yet. But now is definitely the time to focus on the future.
